Hey all, it’s been a while since our last post so I’ll do a quick round up of what we’ve been playing this week.

First up is Boom Beach from SuperCell – This is a great little game for playing when you have a few minutes to spare.

You build a base, collect resources and raid other peoples bases – simples!

There are different troops and defences and a variety of ways to attack. I’m sure that this will do pretty well – it’s free to play, but very easy to spend real money on.

Next up is Dwarven Den – The Mining Puzzle Game from Backflip Studios – which is free to play and quite good fun.

This is probably the first free to play game I’ve played where I haven’t had to spend any money on it – or felt the need too. You can easily upgrade your gear and progress through the game nicely without having to break the bank.

I’m on level 23 so far and have only failed once on a level, so I’d think that this is either aimed at younger players, or the difficulty ramps up slowly.

The levels take around 5 mins to play if you want to collect all the hidden secrets, but some can be finished a lot quicker – well worth an install, especially good if you want to keep the kids quiet for half an hour 🙂

Finally for this post, I’ve just started to play Hakitzu Elite:Robot Hackers from Kuato Studios. Now the cool thing about this game is that it teaches you how to code Java Script by playing the game.

The tutorials are great and very easy to follow. The step by step approach eases you into coding very nicely with its simple approach. Now, the game itself could look better, but that’s not really the point.

The point is that it interactively guides you into programming your first moves, which you can then see straight away and even take onto multiplayer battles once you get the hang of it. Personally, I’ve never really been one for programming, but this has certainly sparked an interest in me, but for anyone interested in getting into programming, this is a very good place to start. Thanks Kuato!

Dragonvale is the new game from Backflip Studios  that is really popular with my son and his friends.

Its a very simple resource management game in that you have a zoo of dragons, which earn you money over time, which enables you to get more dragons.

This is more of a click and wait than a game as everything seems to take ages – most things you need to do (build buildings, breed dragons, hatch eggs, etc) can take between 12-24 hours, which can be a bit slow.

The game is free but there is A LOT of  content that you have to buy (or potentially wait for years) to accumulate the resources to buy.

The food you need to grow to feed the dragons is slow to produce and buying a ‘Pile of Treats’ for £0.69 will only get you a quarter through levelling up a dragon from 9-10. Growing the same amount of food costs over 75,000 gold and takes over an hour 😦 An adult dragon will make roughly 30 giold per minute, so accumulating that much gold will take 1 dragon over 40 hours – that’s if you collect it at every time it fills up (15,000 for a fire dragon).

The 2 most annoying points are putting the game down briefly, and having to endure the loading screen. Also, the game needs an internet connection for some reason, so you can’t play unless you’re connected – maybe they should have just locked out the visit friends functionality if you’re not connected?

The big question for me was “How to breed a sun dragon in Dragonvale?” Well I got mine by breeding a Fire Dragon and a Storm Dragon, but it’s random and pretty rare – I’ve must have tried more than 20 times for my son and he still doesn’t have one

😦

So to summarise, it’s a pretty good game, great artwork, nice to play –  be prepared to spend a lot of cash on it, or endure a pretty slow experience. My son loves it, and plays it at every opportunity, so my negatives don’t really count with him.
